  Category : National Development
  Subject : energy use
Suggestion : Use solar panels on HDB flats rooftops, be envrionmentally friendly. Encourage property developers to design buildings incorporating solar energy system. give them awards or rebates for such designs.

We understand your concerns and appreciate this opportunity to clarify the issue.

2. Based on current technology, the theoretical power generated by solar panels covering HDB rooftops would be only 3% of total electricity demand. In addition, the cost of generating solar energy is higher than that derived from other sources like oil and gas. Hence, for now, it is still not feasible to install solar panels on the roof-tops of HDB flats to cater to the demand of the residents.

3. Nevertheless, HDB will continue to monitor the situation and would consider installing solar panels should it become feasible. Thank you for your interest.

Yours sincerely,

NEA

Solar energy offers a clean source of energy for heating and to generate electricity. Tapping solar energy to heat water instead of using electricity could save money too. Currently, a number of commercial establishments, institutions and private properties in Singapore have installed solar water heaters for their hot water needs. An example is the Flight Kitchen Building at Changi Airport which has a solar energy collector to provide hot water for the preparation of food, cooking and washing.

2 Photovoltaic (PV) panels can be installed on roofs or integrated in the building facade to generate electricity. The cost of electricity generated by PV is however higher than that produced from oil or gas.

3 Notwithstanding the higher cost, the National Environment Agency (NEA) is prepared to explore and support test-bedding of innovative application of solar energy to take advantage of the benefits of using solar energy. The NEA administers the Innovation for Environmental Sustainability Fund and would be pleased to discuss providing partial funding support of innovative projects with interested parties.
